I wouldn't ever have thought that of my PS3. I don't know if a basic computer with windows, plugged in the TV via HDMI with a bluetooth keyboard and mice wouldn't be a smoother experience than the PS4. But as a multimedia machine (which I also appreciated a lot with the PS3), I dislike the experience. I feel there will not be anymore updates on the apps and OS and maybe, even, apps like Netflix will no longer work with the PS3 in the future. But, now, the PS3 is not supported anymore by Sony. It seems to have been more designed for games (which is logical, but sad in the usecase you are talking about). Overall, the PS4 seems to be a less versatile multimedia machine than the PS3 was. The PS4 needs lots of clicks to do the same thing. The interface was very good on the PS3 for streaming apps. The PS4 doesn't seem to have the necessary codecs to read some of the stuff I have. My PS3 was really good at streaming content from my Synology. The bluetooth remote control for the PS3 was superb and it seems it doesn't exist for the PS4, or at least it's bad.

Personnaly, I liked the PS3 more than the PS4 for this kind of use.
